Why Is Preventive Maintenance So Important?

Why Is Preventive Maintenance So Important?

When your vehicle reaches certain milestones, the manufacturer advises you to have certain preventive maintenance services performed. These services vary depending on the vehicle and its mileage but generally include changing fluids, replacing parts, and inspecting the specified systems. The purpose of maintenance is to minimize the risk of experiencing unexpected automotive repairs. By replacing parts and fluids before they break or fully degrade, you can keep your vehicle running like it should.

Despite the practical implications of preventive maintenance, some motorists skip out on these services. Perhaps you're one of them or know someone who keeps putting off car maintenance. However, we encourage you and your friends to reconsider that stance. Following the manufacturer's maintenance guidelines can be a benefit in more ways than one.

Let's take a look:

1) Reduce Unexpected Repairs: Picture this: You're driving and suddenly the check engine light turns on. Perhaps you were having a good day beforehand, or maybe this is the last straw in an already off one. Regardless, it's safe to say no one likes being confronted with an expense they didn't expect. It also means you need to find time to get your vehicle to the shop. If you follow a maintenance plan, you have more control of your time and money. You can look ahead in your owner's manual, so you know when you're due for service and can plan accordingly. Following the maintenance plan also decreases the chance of running into a dashboard warning light. Finally, if you've been putting off service for awhile, it's possible you have quite a list of parts and fluids that should be replaced. When you follow the maintenance guidelines, you address what is recommended at that time instead of everything you've been putting off all at once.

2) Keep Your Warranty Intact: If you're covered by the manufacturer's warranty (or most aftermarket warranties), you're required to take care of your vehicle. Make sure you stay compliant with the agreement so you don't need to worry about being on the line should something fail that is covered. We recommend keeping a folder in your vehicle where you can keep your maintenance records as proof, should you ever need them.

3) Increase Sale Value: Maybe you plan on driving your car until it can't drive anymore, but it's possible you'll choose to sell it in the future. Having a maintenance history will net you points with buyers. You can also use this history to argue for a higher sales price than a vehicle without proof of its maintenance.

At Dean's Automotive Service, we prefer no surprises (unless they're the good kind). We offer preventive maintenance services to help our customers avoid surprises on the road. If you think you may be due (or overdue) for maintenance, give us a call. We'll schedule you in and ensure everything looks good.
